From 2001 to 2007, I was the Behavioral Medicine faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in the Permian Basin.  I worked with faculty and resident physicians to help them improve their role in the patient-physician relationship.

Most of the resident physicians were international medical graduates.  My goal in our work was to help them provide culturally competent care to their patients.

I co-authored a study on how to assist resident physicians to develop cultural competency and  contributed to a textbook on using film to teach behavioral medicine.  Our research was presented at five national medical conferences and several regional conferences.  I now provide cultural competency training to medical care providers.

In addition, I now consult with physicians and other health care providers and systems to improve the quality of the patient-provider relationsip in all settings.  This consultuation is especially helpful for physicians starting a new practice and is a timely tune-up for experienced physicians who want to examine their commuication skills with patients and families.

I also offer Balint Groups to medical care providers to help reduce burn-out and promote professional retention in the field.
