Counseling  Psychotherapy

Counseling and Psychotherapy

Why seek counseling and psychotherapy?

Counseling and psychotherapy can help individuals, couples and families achieve optimal functioning and wellness as they encounter normal life difficulties.  Counseling and psychotherapy can also help when people struggle with mental illness, either in themselves or in people they love.

Treatment philosophy

I believe we all possess within ourselves the wisdom to identify goals, describe problems and  identify solutions so we can achieve our best life.  However, we are all subject to trauma, stressors, illnesses and forces that impede our ability to actively and effectively engage in this normal process.  When this happens, we need help.

My role as a clinician is to help you look within yourself for solutions so you may develop the tools and strategies to resolve problems based on your inner wisdom.  While an outward search for solutions may lead people in distress to focus on the external world, books, friends, family and other authorities, I believe that ultimately we all must find solutions that fit our unique identity and circumstance, our values and life goals.  These solutions can only be based on your wisdom, not mine or that of an external authority.

Areas of specialization

My clinical work includes, but is not limited to, helping with:

  • adjustment issues related to life changes, such as relationship shifts, marriage, pregnancy, childbirth, parenting, divorce, illness, aging and loss
  • adult consequences of childhood trauma
  • anxiety and fears
  • coping wtih medical illness or conditions, such as infertility
  • disordered eating and altered body image
  • family violence
  • feeling out of balance, a lack of direction, stuckness or spiritual disconnection
  • immediate consequences of trauma, such as accidents, violence and abuse
  • mental illnesses, including personality disorders
  • mood disorders, including chronic sadness, depression and bi-polar disorder
  • obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors

In addition, I work with clients experiencing hair pulling (trichotillomania) and other problematic behaviors, such as addictions.

What to expect

If you are interested in scheduling an appointment, please call my office.  I will return your call the same day, although it may be in the evening, so be sure to leave both a day and evening phone number.

To help us get started, I need some information from you.  You may come about 10 minutes early to your first appointment or I can send you the form before your appointment (see the Contact Us page.)

In the initial session, you will have an opportunity to both get to know me and to share with me your perspective on why you are coming to therapy at this time.  Together, we will develop an action plan for your work with me that we will evaluate periodically.

Techniques

I use a varity of therapeutic techniques, depending on you and your needs.  My orientation is grounded in psychodynamic theory and practice.  I believe  that healing can occur both in silence and solitude as well as in conversation and relationships, including the relationship between a client and a therapist.  In my work with you, we might use guided imagery, hypnosis, EFT (emotional freedom techniques), cognitive behavioral therapy and homework when indicated.

While an occasional email from a client is welcomed, I do not do therapy by email or telephone except in pre-arranged situations, such as vacations or other travel.

Fees and insurance

I do not accept insurance from my clients.  I do this for several reasons, most importantly to protect your confidentiality.  However, I am experienced in working with insurance plans and will provide you with all the documentation you need to file claims.  I will also provide reports requested by your insurance plan at no additional charge if you desire this and give me written permission to communicate with your insurance provider.

Payment may be checks or credit card.
